Certification is a process. The esteemed CHRP designation is conferred on a candidate when all academic and experiential requirements are met. The certification process is also ongoing: certified professionals must commit to continuing professional development to maintain certification. This is called recertification.

Certification is a national standard. CCHRA also introduced verification processes to put in place a common standard for assessment of candidates for certification across . National standards were officially introduced in 2003.

Recertification is the means whereby a member with a Certified Human Resources Professional designation maintains certification for another three years. It is a key component of national standards stipulating that certified professionals are required to undertake professional development activities during the three year period.
